Entry-Level Fujitsu Business-centric Storage Delivers Breakthrough in Enterprise-Class Performance Levels

SUNNYVALE, CA, January 30, 2014 Fujitsu today announces that its entry-level ETERNUS DX200 S3 flexible modular disk storage systems are able to deliver enterprise-class performance levels, taking the crown as the world’s fastest data retrieval and access speeds in the mid-range Dual Controller Storage Arrays sector.

As confirmed by the publication of the latest SPC Benchmark-1 from the Storage Performance Council, Fujitsu’s latest generation of entry-level systems, focused on delivering Business-centric Storage, have again set best-in-class benchmark performance.

With the ETERNUS DX200 S3, Fujitsu brings affordable big data analytics on high-performance systems within reach of small and mid-size businesses, even when restricted by limited budgets. Thanks to one of the industry’s highest levels of price-related system performance, the Fujitsu ETERNUS DX200 S3 ensures that running computer resource-intensive real-time business analytics is more affordable than ever.

Pricing and availability

The full range of ETERNUS DX S3 systems and ETERNUS SF16 management software are generally available with immediate effect, sold directly and via Fujitsu Channel Partners. Prices vary depending on configuration.

Notes to editors

-With the latest SPC Benchmark-1 from the Storage Performance Council, Fujitsu ETERNUS DX200 S3 has beaten all mid-range Dual Controller Arrays and also some multi-controller enterprise class storage systems in terms of IOPS and response time.

-The Storage Performance Council (SPC) is a vendor-neutral standards body focused on the storage industry. It created the first industry-standard performance benchmark targeted at the needs and concerns of the storage industry. SPC benchmarks provide a rigorous, audited and reliable measure of performance. Further information is available online at http://www.storageperformance.org

-With a response time of 0.63 milliseconds at 100 percent load, the ETERNUS DX200 S3 achieved the highest scores ever in the history of the SPC-1 benchmark.

-As it is able to run more than 200,000 SPC-1 IOPS, Fujitsu’s entry-level system plays in the same league as much higher-priced mid-range and enterprise systems, with a similar level of performance to many all-flash arrays.

-The dual-controller ETERNUS DX200 S3 offers an outstanding price performance level of US $0.77 / SPC-1 IOPS.

-Fujitsu subscribes to SPC Benchmark testing as a valid and independent way for customers to judge performance results; http://www.storageperformance.org/specs

-The SPC Benchmark-1 test program is designed to simulate business critical applications processing many complex transactions. Pseudo-operational workloads of Online Transactions (OLTP), database operations, and mail systems are recreated to measure random access read/write performance.

Fujitsu Redefines Storage, Puts Business Priorities Ahead

News facts:

-          Revolutionary performance architecture delivers fivefold increase in performance, boosting system utilization up to 90 percent

-          Automated quality of service management aligns storage performance with business priorities

-          Seamlessly integrated block/file access enhance consolidation capabilities

SUNNYVALE, CA – November 6, 2013Fujitsu introduced today a new era of business-centric storage, with new-generation ETERNUS DX systems that are the industry’s first to put business priorities ahead of storage, easing IT challenges such as the management of ever increasing volumes of critical data. This announcement is made at Fujitsu Forum 2013, Europe’s biggest single-vendor IT event. With its new-generation ETERNUS DX S3 disk storage arrays and latest release of the ETERNUS SF V16 system management software, Fujitsu is delivering business-centric systems that are completely flexible and adaptable to users’ business priorities, instead of allowing the technology to rule over its users.

New ETERNUS DX disk systems enable storage professionals to seamlessly adapt to the needs of their users, and deliver better service levels at lower costs. These benefits are a result of a combination of advances, including a fivefold improvement in performance and intelligent data priority management, meaning that the systems themselves are able to shape backup according to business priorities. Across the range, the scalable entry-level ETERNUS DX100 S3 and DX200 S3 models and the midrange ETERNUS DX500 S3 and DX600 S3 models provide unmatched support for data consolidation projects thanks to seamlessly integrated unified NAS and SAN connectivity.

For the first time, Fujitsu is enabling storage professionals to boost system utilization up to 90 percent, breaking with conventional storage wisdom that system capacity should not exceed 50 percent to avoid slow system response times.

Combining significantly increased performance with business-centric, automated quality-of service management, the new Fujitsu ETERNUS DX systems also deliver industry-leading performance, running at five times the IOPS, three times the bandwidth and double the bus performance of previous models. The entire ETERNUS DX line-up is based on the latest Intel multicore processors, featuring optimized multiprocessing and threading capabilities, bigger caches and additional flash caches, the latest SAS3 drive interfaces and 16 GB Fibre Channel connectivity.

A new automated quality of service management means that storage professionals no longer need to perform complex and costly tuning to set required response time for high-priority applications. This increases operational efficiency and enables storage professionals to more easily maintain critical service levels.

Unified storage, seamless integrated block and file access

All new ETERNUS DX systems can be configured as unified storage systems with seamless integrated block and file, and SAN and NAS capabilities. In a major difference from simple gateway architectures, this unified functionality is seamlessly integrated within storage controllers, resulting in a consistent user experience, and providing the ability to share all high availability and failover functionalities for SAN and NAS operations across storage controllers.

Fujitsu is also publishing a roadmap confirming upgrades that will introduce further new functionality as well as boosting performance, efficiency, utilization and business continuity capabilities. Enhancements include the transparent failover of ETERNUS DX systems across model classes, dramatically accelerated data rebuild for failed disks, better disk utilization through data compression and deduplication and the introduction of InfiniBand connectivity.

All ETERNUS DX S3 systems are easier to manage and share the same flexible family architecture, providing investment protection and offering extensive scalability, thanks to the ability to seamlessly upgrade to bigger models within the range. In addition, the latest release of ETERNUS SF software introduces new system management functionality for customers with current Fujitsu ETERNUS DX S2 systems.

Hiroaki Kondo, Corporate Vice President and Head of Storage Systems Business Unit, Fujitsu Limited

“With the new ETERNUS family, Fujitsu demonstrates a customer-centric philosophy with new business-centric storage, with fresh thinking that not only delivers enormous improvements in system utilization but also the industry’s most flexible systems that adapt to users’ business priorities.”

Fujitsu Delivers Complete Infrastructure Consolidation for Backup and Archiving with New Generation ETERNUS CS8000

News facts:

-          New generation ETERNUS CS8000 tackles immense data growth rates

-          Bigger and faster than ever: 300 percent capacity increase and 50 percent throughput increase

-          Parallelized deduplication enables management of large data volumes without speed penalties

-          More flexible use of cloud and remote locations for disaster recovery by extending backup capabilities

SUNNYVALE, CA – November 5, 2013Fujitsu introduced today at Fujitsu Forum 2013 a major step forwards for businesses trying to tackle ever-increasing data volumes. The new generation of Fujitsu’s hugely-successful ETERNUS CS8000 provides complete consolidation for all unified data backup and archiving needs. Online (disk-based) backup capacities is extended to 15 Petabytes, coupled with almost limitless near-line (tape-based) capacity.

Available to order from December 2013, enhancements to the new generation underline the Fujitsu ETERNUS CS8000’s position as the most versatile backup and archiving solution on the market: a failsafe solution that delivers more business-centric storage than ever before.

Due to full virtualization of all disk and tape systems, both for mainframes and open systems, ETERNUS CS8000 offers unmatched flexibility in balancing the four fundamental pillars of data protection: speed, capacity, availability levels and cost. With ETERNUS CS8000, IT managers can ensure they are always able to provide end-users with the right service levels for data backup and archiving, and optimize costs.

Live data from production servers and mainframes is held on a highly scalable disk cache within the ETERNUS CS8000, and data can remain in the disk cache to provide near-instant data recovery. Alternatively, data can be moved to tape, or for additional flexibility, and can be held both on disk and tape.

Powerful deduplication technology is now integrated into the ETERNUS CS8000 internal disk cache, making it suitable as a highly-efficient final backup target. New deduplication capabilities reduce disk space requirements by a factor of between 10 and 50 times. Fujitsu is also offering deduplication as a upgrade to customers of the previous-generation system, known as the ETERNUS CS High End.

Unique to the market, the ETERNUS CS8000 is capable of executing the compute-intensive deduplication process in parallel on several server nodes of its internal modular grid architecture, ensuring that even data sets running into double-digit petabytes do not create performance problems on backup and restore operations. In directly addressing the multi-tenancy needs of service providers, ETERNUS CS8000 can independently operate up to 10 entirely separate deduplication storage pools.

Underlining its abilities in consolidating backup and archiving infrastructures even in very large datacenters, the ETERNUS CS8000 scales to industry-leading capacities: more than 15PB of data before compression or duplication, which is also a 300 percent improvement on the previous model. Maximum data throughput now reaches 150TB/hour, a 50 percent increase, meaning greater protection for environments with extreme data growth without performance restraints.

Large scale file store with disaster resiliency

The Network Attached Storage (NAS) functionality of ETERNUS CS8000, supporting up to 2,000,000,000 files, provides a huge consolidation platform for archiving data and as second-tier NAS storage for inactive file data. Integrated synchronous data mirroring enables businesses to run such a large-scale consolidation platform without risk. Newly-enhanced asynchronous replication functionality provides disaster resiliency, even over extreme long distance, such as between Europe and South America.

Enhanced internal data caching and comprehensive data copy functions also make ETERNUS CS8000 the ideal gateway for copying data in the cloud. The system not only consolidates and manages all backup and archiving targets on-site and integrates local and remote tape libraries, but also now provides more flexible use of lower-cost IT services consumed on-demand for disaster recovery by adding support for cloud storage.

Supporting quote

Scott Harrison, Vice President of Enterprise Products, Fujitsu

“Managing all backup and archiving data on one unified target ETERNUS CS8000 appliance can provide businesses with a failsafe, but still flexible and cost-effective, service levels for a wide variety of demands, as well as guaranteeing future-proof scalability. With this new-generation of ETERNUS CS8000 architecture, Fujitsu is helping customers to secure their business continuity while also reducing operational complexity and cost.”

Pricing and Availability

ETERNUS CS8000 systems are available from December 2013 on a global basis. Pricing is according to region and specification.
